VMware Horizon Mirage 4.2.3 released

without comments

VMware has released a new version of Horizon Mirage. The new version includes new features and bug fixes.

New features:

  • Optimized storage disconnection handling
  • SSL configuration option for Mirage Server installation
  • CE Calculator
  • Branch Reflector Enhancements

Tim has published a bit more information on his blog.

  • Better storage disconnects handling – Horizon Mirage servers now identify high load conditions on storage that can cause disconnects and can throttle down to allow storage utilization to return to normal.
  • SSL configuration option in Horizon Mirage server installation – The IT manager can now configure SSL communication during server installation. There is no need to perform this operation with the Management console after installing.
  • CE calculator – A new tool enables VMware personnel to better estimate Horizon Mirage centralization process requirements. The calculator estimates the network resources and storage that will be required and the time that the centralization will take.
  • Branch reflector enhancements – The IT manager can better design and monitor branch reflector deployment by simulating the branch reflector selection on endpoints. The IT manager can now click any device from the Management console and see if it has a branch reflector in its vicinity.

Internet Explorer 6 on Windows 7

with one comment

Web applications should be platform independent because their are standards like HTML which can be interpreted by any browser out there. They should, but many web applications are not true web applications. They use components like ActiveX or special plug-ins for the browser. Siebel is one good example for that. Loads of companies invested in web applications in the last few years and many of them are tight connected to a dedicated browser. But what if a browser goes EOL, like we see with Internet Explorer 6 today? Internet Explorer 6 can’t be installed natively on Windows 7, but many web applications still depends on it. For a company that means that they can’t move to new client operating systems, have to redesign the applications or find another way to run the legacy web application. On the VMware ThinApp blog there was an article published two days ago, which brings some videos showing how IE6 can run on Windows 7 with a Tech Preview of Thinapp.
