The history of VDI
Did you know that VDI was born back in 2002? A nice read of history for everyone who loves VDI.
Totally forgot about VMware running the VDI Alliance Program back in 2006.

Interested in how Transfer Server works?
My colleague Simon Long from PSO published a nice write up on how the View Transfer Server works today. It’s not deep technical, more high-level but definitely a great read. Check it out.

VCA-DT 4 passed!
Yesterday night I got the confirmation from VMware’s certification department that I’ve passed the VCA-DT desktop exam. By next week I should get my score. I’m really looking forward to this. The VMware Certified Associate 4 (VCA4-DT) is the first certification especially for VMware’s end user computing products. The exam is design for desktop administrators who want to show their ability to manage, monitor and troubleshoot desktop environments and the VMware View components.
VMware recommends the following courses for preperation but they are not a requirement for the exam:
- VMware View 4.5 Fundamentals (web-based course)
- VMware View™: Install, Configure, Manage (VIEW)
If you want to learn more about the VCA4-DT exam, please follow this link and check the blueprint for the exam here.
Role based administration
One of the new features in VMware View 4.5 is the role based administration. This offers more flexibility when working with different departments i.e. user helpdesk. In previous versions of View there was only the administrator role for the View Administrator interface. This meant that the user who logs in to the management console has full access to all functions. He could deploy and delete desktops or change the global configuration even when his job was just to monitor the desktops. With the role based administration feature you can now work with various privileges and permissions for the users who will get access to View Administrator.
ThinApp 4.6 is there
VMware just released a new version of ThinApp full of great features. My favourite is the new ThinApp Converter 1.0 but read the full article to learn more.
Delete a Replica Server from a server group
For high availability of the View Manager environment it’s possible to add a maximum of 4 additional connection servers, called Replica servers to one View connection server group. In total you’ll have 5 servers dealing with the connecting users. During the installation of a replica server it is manually added to the server group by the administrator and it’s configuration data is written to the View LDAP database afterwards. The new server itself does create a copy of the existing View LDAP instance and replicate all data. During operations all changes on the View servers including the Global Settings, the users and the desktops are propagated between all servers in the View connection server group. If one of the replica servers is removed from the group by disconnection or installation which is permanent it is recommend to delete this servers from the View LDAP.
VMware & Google in a nutshell
Today VMware announced to start a series of technology collaborations with Google for delivering solutions that help enterprise software developers to be more efficient at building and deploying their applications. Both companies are collaborating in multiple cases to make cloud applications more productive, portable and flexible. Google is announcing support for Spring Java Applications on the Google App Engine. Using the Eclipse-based SpringSource Toolkit Suite, developers can build and deploy applications in their VMware vSphere environments, at VMware vCloud partners or directly to the Google App Engine. VMware and Google are also working together with Spring Roo, a rapid application development tool and the Google Web Toolkit (GWT). Finally teh companies are collaborating with their performance tracing technologies. You can find the Google I/O live webcast at Youtube. There is also a blog post from Steve Herrod at his blog.
VMware Support Toolbar
One week ago VMware announced the availability of a new browser toolbar on their Support Insider Blog at: http://blogs.vmware.com/kb/. The new toolbar works with Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Safari. It gives you instant access to patches, documentation and more. The built-in RSS and Twitter capability gives you direct updates from support. A live peer to peer chat gives you the opportunity to ask an VMware expert or staff for help. You can find the download at: http://vmwaresupport.toolbar.fm.
VMware vSphere 4.0 Hardening Guide
Today VMware announced the availability of the final release of the vSphere 4.0 Hardening Guide, which includes the extensive feedback of the VMware Community on the previous draft. You can find further details on the VMware Blogs.
